One of the latest buzzwords regarding the markets appears to be “shareholder activist”. Lately there has been a good deal of publicity in the financial world surrounding names such as Bill Ackman, Carl Icahn, and Daniel Loeb speaking out against companies such as Herbalife, Dell Computer, Time Warner, and
Apple. In the first 6 months of 2013, 14 activist campaigns were publicly launched involving companies with market capitalizations greater than $1 billion. Last year, 21 public campaigns were launched for larger companies.
